about:
Tanner grew up in New England, the son of a commercial printer, where his pre-conscious mind was exposed to the pungent inks and droning pistons of the offset printing press — creating a cognitive environment where materiality and dreams may (someday) collide. His work moves between traditional and alternative processes—harnessing formal-sleights-of-hand, varying degrees of description, and the physical print—to explore the medium's slippery attachments to reality; to express a concern: Nature (internal and external) is ensnared in human “progress”.
tanner is a photographer, filmmaker, and writer. he received his mfa at yale school of art (2024), where he was awarded the dean’s prize. he is the recipient of the hariban benrido award (2026) and aperture magazine’s creator fund (2024). tanner was a worthless-studios artist-in-resident (2025), alongside luis manuel diaz, for their collaborative project the horizon bleeds and sucks it's thumb. his work is in the permanent collection at yale's haas library and has been exhibited at anonymous (nyc) and webber (la).
tanner is the co-founder and director of seen (2020-present), a non-profit which advocates for queer visibility and inclusion in snowboarding through events, media, and mutual aid. tanner is also the founder of picturehouse (2026-present), a forthcoming rhode island based non-profit, which will offer residencies, workshops, and grants, to marginalized and underrepresented artists working with photography.
